Finding my “big girl” job

I am a busy girl!

And lately I’ve been feeling like I am being pulled in several directions at once. As if my very distinct and separate interests are clashing with one another, forcing me to choose between them. I LOVE practicing yoga and my passion for teaching is just beginning, yet growing steadily everyday. I am also keen to continue the work I’ve been doing as an outdoor educator and guide – a dream that started nearly 6 years ago when I was living in Whistler, BC.

Since then I have completed 2 years of University where I studied Tourism and Outdoor Recreation,  I completed 200 Hours of Yoga teacher training, traveled to New Zealand, Ireland, the UK, Greece, Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands. I’ve worked at a bakery, a fitness centre, at a yoga studio, worked in retail, at several restaurants, I’ve kayak guided, snowshoe guided, tour guided, taught yoga – the list goes on…

All these different experiences have been valuable, yet much of this has felt temporary, either seasonal work that doesn’t last long, or short hours, where I need to work 3 jobs just to stay afloat. I want more! I want something to grow and move forward with; to be promoted, to provide leadership, to not just have a “job” but to have something I can feel proud of. Now don’t get me wrong, I realize I have A LOT to be thankful for, I also value my LIFESTYLE over having a “career” but there comes a time when you don’t want to work 3 part-time jobs, where you want 2 solid days off IN A ROW and to be paid enough so you can support yourself and invest in your own future!

I also realize this is a process… part of the (personal) work that I’m doing is to be patient, to work hard and give space and time for everything to fall into place. This post isn’t meant to be a laundry list of complaints, but to say that I feel like I’m finally getting there!

Perhaps it comes with maturity or experience or a bit of both, but I am beginning to see what’s valuable about me. I have more confidence in my abilities and am starting to see a trend happening in the positions I ENJOY doing. I enjoy working with people, I enjoy fostering confidence in others and I enjoy sharing what I love with people. As far as I’m concerned I’m on my way;  whether its in a kayak or on a yoga mat. It’s beginning to make sense to me, and I am excited for this process to continue.
